For families who moved countries, sometimes more than once, old photos carry a special weight. They may be the only images of grandparents who stayed behind, of a village that no longer exists, of traditions the younger generation never saw. They're also often scattered across continents and in poor condition after years of travel.

Gather photos across borders

  • Ask relatives in the home country to photograph their albums and send files (as documents, not compressed chat images; see fixing compressed WhatsApp photos).
  • Collect from every branch of the diaspora; cousins in different countries often have different photos.
  • Check suitcases, documents and letters: photos were often carried in passports, wallets and envelopes.
  • Scan identity and travel photos: passport photos and visa portraits are sometimes the only portraits of a person.

Restore travel-worn photos

Photos that crossed borders were often folded, carried in wallets or exposed to humid climates. Typical damage: creases, tears, fading and mold spots. With Refixo, tap Restore to repair the damage and sharpen faces. Small wallet and passport photos need a careful high-resolution capture (see restoring small wallet photos).

Traditional dress and colorization

AI colorization is trained on huge datasets but may not know the specific colors of traditional clothing from every region, such as a djellaba, kaftan, sari, hanbok or embroidered regional costume. After colorizing:

  • Ask older relatives what colors were worn.
  • Look at color photos from the same region and era.
  • Correct colors if needed, or note in the caption that colors are interpretations.

The Moroccan family photo on our homepage is an example of a colorized family scene (AI-generated for illustration).

Record names in both languages

Write captions with names and places in the original language and script as well as in the language your children speak. Place names change; record both old and new names where possible (see labeling old photos).

Frequently asked questions

How can I get old photos from relatives abroad?

Ask them to photograph prints in daylight and send them as files or through a shared folder.

Can AI colorize traditional clothing correctly?

It gives plausible colors, but specific regional colors may need correction from family knowledge.

Should captions be in the original language?

Yes, ideally in both the original language and the language the younger generation speaks.

What if the only photo is a passport photo?

Capture it at high resolution and restore it. Small passport photos often enlarge well after restoration.
