School photos are a family archive in themselves: the same child every year from kindergarten to graduation, plus class pictures full of friends, teachers and funny haircuts. They're also commonly faded (especially 1970s–90s color prints) and the faces in class photos are tiny.

Individual school portraits

These are usually easy restorations:

  • Capture without glare; many have a glossy or textured finish (see photographing prints without glare).
  • In Refixo, tap Restore to fix fading and color casts, remove scratches and sharpen the face.
  • Put a whole series in order: one per year makes a lovely "growing up" frame or slideshow.

Class photos: the small-face problem

Class photos have 20–40 faces in one print, so each face is small.

  1. Scan at high resolution: 600–1200 dpi, or capture with your phone in sections (see best DPI for scanning photos).
  2. Restore the whole photo for an overall cleanup.
  3. Crop sections or individual faces and restore them separately for sharper faces (see sharpening faces in old photos).
  4. Check likeness: tiny faces get the most reconstruction.

Faded color school photos

Prints from the 1970s–1990s often turn orange or magenta. Restoration corrects the color cast and brings back natural skin tones (see fixing faded photos).

Names and memories

Class photos often have names printed below or written on the back. If not:

  • Ask the person in the photo, or their classmates.
  • Share the restored photo in alumni or old-classmates groups; people love identifying themselves and friends.
  • Write the names left to right, row by row, in the caption (see labeling old photos).

Projects with school photos

  • Growing-up frame for a graduation, wedding or milestone birthday.
  • Reunion slideshow of restored class photos (see family reunion photo slideshow).
  • Then-and-now: a parent's and child's school photos at the same age.

School photos from different eras

  • Before the 1950s: black and white class photos, often outdoors in front of the school building, sometimes with a slate showing the class and year.
  • 1950s–60s: individual black and white portraits become common; colorization works well.
  • 1970s–90s: color portraits with mottled backdrops, often strongly faded.
  • 2000s: early digital school photos, sometimes low resolution (see enhancing old digital camera photos).

Frequently asked questions

How can I restore an old school photo?

Capture it at high resolution, then restore it with an AI app to fix fading, scratches and blur.

How do I get clear faces in a class photo?

Scan at high resolution and restore cropped sections or individual faces separately.

Why are my old school photos orange?

The dyes in 1970s–90s color prints fade unevenly, leaving warm casts. Restoration corrects this.

Can I share restored class photos with classmates?

Yes. Alumni groups often enjoy them; ask before posting photos of others publicly.
