An out-of-focus photo is one where the lens focused at the wrong distance: on the background instead of the people, or on nothing in particular. The image looks soft in every direction, without the streaks of motion blur. It's one of the more fixable kinds of blur.

Recognize focus blur

  • Soft edges in all directions, no streaks.
  • Often something else in the photo is sharp (a background tree, a wall).
  • Light points become soft discs.
  • Common in old fixed-focus cameras when people stood too close, and in autofocus misses.

How AI helps

AI sharpening predicts what a sharp version of a soft image would look like. Face models are particularly good at this because faces are so consistent: they know what eyes, lips and hair look like in focus. In Refixo, tap Restore to sharpen faces and details, reduce noise and enhance the image overall.

Results are best when:

  • Faces are reasonably large in the frame.
  • Blur is moderate (you can still roughly make out features).
  • The capture is clean and well lit.

Manual sharpening has limits

Unsharp Mask and similar tools increase edge contrast. They help slightly soft images, but on a truly out-of-focus photo, they mostly add halos and noise. If you use them, use small amounts after AI enhancement.

Check your capture first

A photo of a sharp print taken with the phone focused on the table edge will look out of focus. When capturing prints:

  • Tap on a face to focus.
  • Keep the phone parallel so the whole print is in focus.
  • Don't get closer than your phone's minimum focus distance; use 2× zoom for small prints.

Background sharp, people blurry?

If the background is sharp and people aren't, AI face enhancement can still help a lot. The background stays as it is, and the faces improve. Compare likeness carefully (see sharpening faces in old photos).

When a different photo is the better choice

If you have several photos of the same person from the same period, compare them before investing time in a badly out-of-focus one. A slightly less flattering but sharp photo will always restore more faithfully than a lovely but very blurry one. Use the blurry photo for the moment it captures and the sharp one as your reference for what the person looked like.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fix a photo that's out of focus?

Moderately out-of-focus photos can be improved a lot with AI. Severely blurred ones improve, but details may be reconstructed.

Why are faces blurry but the background sharp?

The camera focused on the background. Old fixed-focus cameras also blurred subjects that stood too close.

Does Refixo fix out-of-focus photos?

Refixo's restoration sharpens faces and details and enhances overall quality, which improves soft, out-of-focus photos.

Is it better to fix focus blur on a computer?

Not necessarily. AI apps on iPhone and iPad give similar results to desktop tools for most family photos.
